Description

Surgery performed to repair a birth defect consisting of fusion of the fingers or toes, also called syndactyly. The tissue between the fingers and toes usually only consists of skin, but rarely can involve bone, nerves, muscle and blood vessels. The most commonly affected digits are the long and ring fingers, and the second and third toes. In the U.S. webbing of the fingers or toes occurs in 1 in every 2,000 births. Surgical repair is usually performed between the ages 6 and 24 months. Rarely webbing of the the fingers or toes occurs from severe burn injuries.

Common Complications

Complications include injury to the joint, ligaments, cartilage, nerves or blood vessels. All surgery comes with the risk of infection and blood clots. General anesthesia runs the risk of allergic reactions or breathing problems. The surgery may not produce the desired result.
