Vasectomy (surgical sterilization)

Description

Description

A surgical procedure in which the tubes (vas deferens) that carry sperm from the testicles to the penis are cut and blocked. This procedure prevents the sperm from fertilizing the egg during intercourse. The procedure is considered a permanent form of birth control although it can sometimes be reversed with another surgery. The procedure is done in the office under local anesthesia.

Common Complications

Common Complications

Patients can experience an infection at the surgical site consisting of redness, increased warmth, or a cloudy discharge from the wound. Bleeding at the site can cause swelling (hematoma) and pain. The large tube (epididymis) next to the sperm carrying tube (vas deferens) can become infected or inflamed. This is called epididymitis. Chronic pain in the testicle can sometimes occur. Rarely the procedure can fail and the patient is still able to impregnate his partner.
