Urostomy (artificial opening for the urinary system)

Description
A surgical procedure creating an opening from the urinary tract to the outside of the body, for the excretion of urine. It is usually done following treatment of bladder cancer.

Common Complications
The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
