Transurethral resection (TURP, removal of part or all of prostate)

Description
A surgical procedure performed with a special instrument inserted through the urethra which is often used to treat an enlarged prostate.

Common Complications
Impotence, inability to urinate, semen entering the bladder (retrograde ejaculation), and bloody urine. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
