Transfusion (blood into the bloodstream)

Description
A medical treatment providing blood components or whole blood into the bloodstream. It may involve the person's stored blood, or blood donated for this use. Transfusions most often occur for low blood count from bleeding or anemia.

Common Complications
Even after cross matching of blood reactions can occur. Severe reactions cause fever, breathing problems, chest pain and even death. Milder reactions include hives, itching and a feeling of uneasiness. The spread of infection is another rare complication.
