Description

A surgical procedure to establish an opening (stoma) into the windpipe (trachea), which is then also called a tracheotomy. Commonly needed after part of the windpipe is removed for cancer. Other reasons for the procedure include severe lung damage, or trauma.

Common Complications

Scarring of the trachea (stenosis), infection, and damage to the blood vessels of the neck. Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
