There are multitude methods to measure the pressure including: applanation tonometry, electronic indentation tonometry, pneumotonometry, and indentation tonometry (Schiotz). An elevated intraocular pressure is found in glaucoma and the pressure rises without any symptoms highlighting the importance of having the pressure measured during a routine eye exam.
