Thyroidectomy (remove thyroid)
Description
A surgical procedure to remove part or all of the thyroid. The thyroid gland is removed because of cancer, overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), and non-cancerous thyroid growth or inflammation (goiter).

Common Complications
Injury to the parathyroid gland causing low calcium levels. Nerve injury resulting in hoarseness. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
