Thyroid blood tests

Description
Blood tests used to measure the activity of the thyroid gland. The first test usually performed is the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH is made by the pituitary gland and it stimulates the release of thyroid hormone from the thyroid gland. If the TSH is too high the patient does not have enough thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) and if the TSH is abnormally low there is too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism). Other blood tests can measure the actual amount of thyroid hormone and there are two types in the body, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
