Swan Ganz catheter placement (tube in jugular vein)

Description
A surgical procedure to place a large bore intravenous catheter into the subclavian or internal jugular vein for IV access, blood draw, and obtaining central venous and pulmonary artery pressures.

Common Complications
Infection and pain at the insertion site. The infection can spread to the blood stream and be life threatening. Injury to the blood vessel and/or blood clot in the vessel. Insertion of the catheter can cause a collapse in the lung or bleeding in the lung. Rarely the heart can be damaged during placement of the catheter.
