Description

A medical device placed inside a lumen or tube-like structure (blood vessel, ureter or the gastrointestinal tract) and generally expanded to keep the structure open. It is commonly used for keeping coronary arteries open after angioplasty. Some of the stents contain medications to help prevent a formation of a blood clot (drug eluding stent).

Common Complications

The artery with the stent can become blocked with the formation of a new blood clot. Rarely placement of the stent can tear the artery requiring emergent surgery to bypass the vessel.
