Splenectomy (remove spleen)

Description
A surgical procedure to remove the spleen. The major reasons for splenectomy are trauma, spontaneous rupture, cancer, low platelets (thrombocytopenia), and other hematologic diseases.

Common Complications
Increased risk of life threatening infections from encapsulated bacteria (such as S. pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae). The surgery can result in damage to the intestines or adjacent blood vessels. Post-operative pain, blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
