Radical mastectomy (remove breast, chest muscles and lymph nodes)

Description
A surgical procedure in which the breast, chest muscles, and all of the lymph nodes under the arm are removed, usually for breast cancer.

Common Complications
Fluid collections (seroma), and injury to blood vessels or nerves. Chronic swelling may occur in the upper extremity that the lymph nodes were removed. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
