Radical lymph node dissection (remove lymph nodes)

Description
A surgical procedure in which the lymph nodes are removed and examined to see whether they contain cancer. Also called lymph node dissection or lymphadenectomy.

Common Complications
Injury to nerves and surrounding blood vessels. The arm or leg being served by the lymph nodes can have chronic swelling called lymphedema. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
