Radical cystectomy (remove bladder)

Description
A surgical procedure to remove the bladder as well as nearby tissues and organs for the treatment of bladder cancer.

Common Complications
Injury to the intestines or pelvic blood vessels. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke. The risk of major complication is 5% and the mortality rate is 1%-3%.
