Plasmapheresis (therapeutic plasma exchange)

Description
The procedure consists of removal of blood, separation of blood cells from plasma, and return of the blood cells to the body's circulation. The blood cells are typically diluted with a saline solution and a blood protein called albumin. Plasmapheresis is done to treat many auto-immune diseases such as Guillian Barre, and myasthenia gravis.

Common Complications
Infection of the blood from the insertion of the catheter. Allergic reactions ranging from a rash to life threatening swelling and low blood pressure can occur.
