Plantar fasciotomy

Description
An incision is made over the heel. The inflammed tissue is removed and the plantar fascia is cut from the heel. The foot can be numbed at the ankle or the patient can be given general anesthesia. The procedure is most commonly performed to treat chronic plantar fasciitis.

Common Complications
Complications include injury to the joint, ligaments, cartilage, nerves or blood vessels. All surgery comes with the risk of infection and blood clots. General anesthesia runs the risk of allergic reactions or breathing problems. The surgery may not relieve the foot pain.
