PICC line

Description
A PICC line is a peripherally inserted central catheter. The procedure is performed by using an ultrasound to find a vein usually in the upper arm. A long slender flexible tube is inserted into the vein in the arm and threaded toward the chest until it enters a large vein that enters the heart. A PICC line is less invasive than other central lines that enter the large veins in the chest. A PICC line can be used for longer periods of time as compared to normal intravenous lines placed in the arm. The procedure is done to give patients antibiotics, chemotherapy, total parental nutrition (TPN), or for any other extended intravenous treatment.
