Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA)

Description
A procedure to open clogged or blocked arteries. A catheter is positioned in the narrowed coronary artery, with a tiny balloon at its tip. The balloon is then inflated and deflated sequentially to stretch or break open the narrowing and improve the opening and passage for blood flow.

Common Complications
Infection, pain and swelling. Damage to the blood vessels of the heart or leg, rarely requiring immediate surgery. The contrast used can rarely damage the kidneys. Some patients can be allergic to the contrast causing a reaction from a rash to life threatening swelling or drop in blood pressure.
