Small instruments are inserted through the skin into the disc between the vertebrae. The disc material is removed by cutting it out or using a laser to remove the material. X-rays are used to guide the instrument. The procedure is done to relieve the pain of a herniated disc.

Common Complications

Complications include chronic pain and failure of the procedure requiring a repeat procedure. All surgery comes with the risk of infection and blood clots. General anesthesia runs the risk of allergic reactions or breathing problems.
