Description
A surgical procedure for pancreatic cancer involving removal of the pancreas and duodenum.

Common Complications
Injury to the intestines, blood vessels or other internal organs of the abdomen. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.

Research
Resection of portovenous structures to obtain microscopically negative margins during pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic adenocarcinoma is worthwhile.
