Open heart surgery (cardiac surgery)

Description
A surgical procedure involving opening the thoracic cavity, specifically for heart valve replacements, heart bypass surgeries (coronary artery), heart transplants and other open heart procedures.

Common Complications
Injury to the heart, lungs or major blood vessels of the heart and lungs. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
