Oophorectomy (remove ovaries)
Description
A surgical procedure to remove one or both ovaries. An ovary is removed for large cysts, tumors, ectopic pregnancy or because of twisting (torsion) and death of the ovary. The procedure can be done through an incision (open) or through a laproscope.

Common Complications
Injury to the intestines, bladder, uterus, or pelvic blood vessels. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
