Myringotomy and tympanostomy (ear tubes)

Description
The surgeon makes a small incision in the eardrum (tympanic membrane) to drain fluid. Most of the time a small tube (tympanopasty tube) will be placed to prevent the fluid from re-accumulating. The most common cause of the fluid build up is a chronic middle ear infection (otitis media).

Cost
Average In-Network Cost: $3,885.55*
Average Out-of-Network Cost: $9,603.11*

Common Complications
Complications include: persistent ear infection, thickening of the eardrum, persistent perforation after the tube falls out, chronic ear drainage, scarring of the eardrum, abnormal reaction to the tube. All surgery comes with the risk of infection and blood clots. General anesthesia runs the risk of allergic reactions or breathing problems.
