Mohs micrographic surgery

Description
An office based surgery that removes skin cancer. It is most effective for basal cell carcinomas but is also used for squamous cell cancers and certain types of melanomas. The doctor removes very thin layers of cells and each layer is immediately viewed under a microscope to ensure all the cancer is removed while minimizing the amount of damage done to healthy tissue. The procedure is recommended for cancers where a scar would be very visible, in cancers with hard to determine borders, and for large aggressive cancers.
