Mediastinoscopy (view space between lungs and heart)

Description
A diagnostic procedure performed to directly view the space between the lungs and in front of the heart, including the adjacent lymph nodes. It can be helpful in making the diagnosis of lung cancer, tuberculosis, lymphoma and other conditions.

Common Complications
Pain, infection and damage to surrounding tissues. The surgery can result in blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
