Lymphadenectomy (remove lymph node)

Description
A surgical procedure in which the lymph nodes are removed and examined to see whether they contain cancer. Also called lymph node dissection.

Common Complications
Pain, infection, swelling and damage to surrounding nerves or blood vessels. After the surgery patients may experience persistent swelling of the surgical area. The surgery can result in blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
