Lumbar puncture (Spinal tap)

Description
A medical procedure in which a needle is put into the lower part of the spinal column to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), administer anesthesia, or to give anticancer drugs into the subarachnoid space.

Common Complications
Infection, bleeding, and nerve injury are rare complications. The most common problem is leaking of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) causing a spinal headache (postural headache). The pain of a spinal headache decreases with laying flat and increases with standing up.
