Lumbar CT (CAT) scan with dye
Description
A test using special xrays that provides detail images of the bones and spinal cord. The bones of the lower back make up the lumbar spine. This test can identify broken bones, infections, arthritis, cancers, herniated discs, spinal cord injuries, and nerve damage of the lower back. Dye (contrast) is given in the vein to provide better images of the blood vessels and other structures, and is generally used in disorders such as infections, trauma and cancer.

Common Complications
There is a small risk of radiation. This risk is felt to be greater with babies and children. In some patients the dye can cause allergic reactions and/or kidney damage.
