Lower GI series (barium enema)

Description
A diagnostic procedure using x-rays to diagnose problems in the large intestine, which includes the colon and rectum. It can be used to diagnose abnormal growths, ulcers, polyps, and diverticuli, and colon cancer.

Common Complications
Occasionally constipation occurs. Rarely perforation of the rectum or colon occurs. Perforation can be very serious leading to infection and death if not treated urgently.
