Laparotomy (surgically open the abdomen)

Description
A surgical procedure involving an incision made in the wall of the abdomen. The procedure is done to determine an abnormality, remove damaged tissue or remove a tumor.

Common Complications
The internal organs of the abdomen can be damaged. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
