Laminoplasty (remove pressure from spinal cord in neck)

Description
A surgical procedure to cut the back of the spine (vertebra) and hinging it back to increase the size of the spinal canal. The lamina can be supported with bone struts, sutures, metal plates or spacers and tension bands. The common reason for this procedure is spinal stenosis.

Common Complications
Nerve injury causing weakness and numbness. A collection of fluid and/or blood can require repeat surgery. Some patients have persistent pain. Surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus).
