Laminectomy (remove bony section of the spine)

Description
A surgical procedure to remove bony sections of the back of the spine (lamina) to relieve pressure off of a nerve. The surgery is done to relieve the narrowing of the spinal canal from spinal stenosis, degenerative disk disease, herniated disc, sciatica, and spondylosis. It is often done with a discectomy or spinal fusion.

Common Complications
Nerve injury causing weakness and numbness. A collection of fluid and/or blood can require repeat surgery. The surgery can result in post-operative pain or persistent pain. May also result in infection, blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
