Lactate (Lactic acid)

Description

Description

Lactate is produced in the body when there is not enough oxygen being delivered to the tissues. This occurs most commonly during sustained intense exercise when the muscles are forced to use anaerobic metabolism. This is a normal reaction by the body. It is also seen in serious diseases where the blood pressure becomes too low such as sepsis. Doctors use the lactate level to estimate how well a patient is oxygenating their body.
