Knee arthroplasty (knee replacement)

Description
A surgical procedure to replace the knee with an artificial joint. The damaged cartilage and bone of the knee joint (tibia, femur, and patella) are replaced with a combination of metal and plastic components. The most common reason for knee replacement are arthritis and other conditions which deteriorate the cartilage and bone of the joint.

Common Complications
Knee stiffness, blood loss and nerve injury are risks. About 2% of patients experience serious complications. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
