Joint replacement surgery

Description
A surgical procedure to remove an arthritic or dysfunctional joint and replace it with an artificial joint (prosthesis). A joint is a connection between two bones. The surgery is usually done by an orthopedic surgeon and may involve a full or partial joint replacement. Most common joints to replace are hip and knee joints.

Common Complications
Complications depend on which joint is being replaced but in general involve dislocation of the new joint, loosening of hardware, breakage of hardware, and nerve or blood vessel injury during the procedure. Infection of the new joint is also a risk. Any surgery can result in pain or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
