A medical procedure to place a plastic breathing tube into the trachea (breathing tube that connects the lungs to the throat) to support ventilation and oxygenation, as well as protecting the airway by controlling any secretions.

Common Complications

The teeth, mouth, throat, vocal cords or trachea can be injured while placing the tube. If patients vomit during the procedure they can breath in stomach contents (aspiration) causing a lung infection (pneumonia).
