Intravenous (IV)

Description
Inside a vein. Usually refers to giving a medication directly into a vein. The vein can be entered directly with a needle as a one time administration or by placing a plastic catheter into the vein (intravenous line or IV).

Common Complications
A blood clot can develop in the vein. Some medications such as chemotherapy agents can damage the vein.
