ICD implantation (implant to monitor heart rhythm)

Description
Surgical implantation of an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator which monitors the heart's rhythm and uses an electrical shock to restore a normal heart rhythm. Small incisions are made in the chest where the device is inserted.

Common Complications
Complications occur in 2-3% of cases and include damage to blood vessels, lung or heart. Any surgery can result in pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
