Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)

Description
A surgical procedure to remove the uterus. The surgery can be done through the vagina or through the abdomen.

Common Complications
Injury to the organs in the pelvis including the bladder, ureter (tube connecting kidney to bladder), intestine, and blood vessels. Any surgery can result in pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
