Hip Osteotomy

Description
A surgical procedure in which the bones of the hip joint are cut, reoriented, and fixed in a new position.The procedure is performed to orient the weight bearing of the femur in line with areas of healthy cartilage. Typically a metal plate or pin is placed to keep the femur in its new orientation. The two most common types of hip osteotomy are varus rotational osteotomy and pelvic osteotomy.

Common Complications
Complications include injury to the joint, ligaments, cartilage, nerves or blood vessels. All surgery comes with the risk of infection and blood clots. General anesthesia runs the risk of allergic reactions or breathing problems. The surgery may not relieve the stiffness or chronic pain of the hip.
