Hip arthroplasty (hip replacement)

Description
A surgical procedure to replace the hip with an artificial joint. The cup shaped hip socket and the ball of the thigh bone are replaced with metal and plastic components. The most common reasons for hip replacement are arthritis and other conditions which deteriorate the cartilage and bone of the joint.

Common Complications
Joint dislocation, bone fracture, hardware fracture, loosening of the joint, and change in leg length are all risks. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
