Helical computed tomography (CT scan)

Description
A series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body taken by a computer linked to an x-ray machine. Pictures are taken using a spiral path. Also called CT or CAT scan or Spiral CT scan.

Common Complications
CT scans require radiation. All radiation increases the risk of cancer later in life. The contrast used in a CTA can rarely damage the kidneys, and some patients can be allergic to the contrast resulting in a rash to life-threatening swelling and low blood pressure.
