Head CT (CAT scan)
Description
A special xray that enables a doctor to see abnormalities of the brain. This test is most often used to detect brain injuries, bleeding in the brain, strokes, brain abscesses, and skull fractures. The test is most often done without intravenous dye (contrast) but can also be done with contrast to better visualize blood vessels, infections and cancers.

Common Complications
Since xrays are involved there is a small radiation risk with this procedure. The risk is felt to be greater in babies and children.
