Hammer toe repair

Description
An incision is made over the affected toe and part of the tendon and joint are removed. Ligaments are cut to re-align the toe in its proper orientation. After the toe is straightened part of the bone is removed and the incision is closed. The foot can be numbed at the ankle or the patient can be given general anesthesia.

Common Complications
Complications include injury to the joint, ligaments, cartilage, nerves or blood vessels. All surgery comes with the risk of infection and blood clots. General anesthesia runs the risk of allergic reactions or breathing problems. The surgery may not relieve the pain or deformity of the foot.
