Gastric Bypass (stomach stapling)

Description
Gastric bypass is the most common type of bariatric surgery: a procedure that is performed to help patients lose weight. A portion of the stomach is closed off so food cannot enter preventing the patient form eating as much. The surgery can be done with sutures, staples, or by applying a band. The procedure has been associated with improved glucose control in type 2 diabetics and in some cases the disease no longer requires specific treatment after the procedure. There can also be improvements in high blood pressure, cholesterol, and sleep apnea. The amount of weight a patient loses is variable and dependent on other life style changes.
