Gastrectomy (surgical removal of stomach)

Description
An surgical procedure to resect part or all of the stomach. It may be indicated to treat a bleeding ulcer, stomach cancer, and other conditions.

Common Complications
Any surgery can result in pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Some patients experience dumping syndrome with food entering the small intestine too quickly resulting in: cramping, diarrhea, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, shortness of breath, and sweating. Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
