Description

A flexible tube with a camera is inserted into the rectum. The doctor examines the inside of the rectum and the last part of the colon called the sigmoid colon. The procedure is performed to look for cancer, take samples of the rectum or colon (biopsies) or diagnose other diseases of the rectum or colon.

Common Complications

Complications include injury to the rectum or sigmoid colon, and rarely perforation which can be very serious. The anesthesia runs the risk of allergic reactions or breathing problems.
