Esophagoscopy (camera images of esophagus)

Description
A procedure to examine the esophagus using a thin, lighted scope. It can be helpful in diagnosing cancer, esophageal obstruction, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other conditions. Doctors can open blockages, stop bleeding or take biopsies of the esophagus through the scope.

Common Complications
Damage to the esophagus including perforation. The procedure requires sedation and patients can rarely have bad reactions from the anesthesia.
