Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

Description
A procedure, involving a catheter in the intestinal tract, that is used to diagnose and treat a variety of gastrointestinal conditions like gallstones and pancreatitis. The catheter is placed through a special tube with a camera (endoscope) that is placed through the patient's mouth and passed through the esophagus and stomach into the small intestine (duodenum).

Common Complications
Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) occurs in 10% of the cases, and severe pancreatitis in 1%. Severe pancreatitis can be serious and even life threatening. Damage to esophagus, stomach or small intestine (duodenum) can also occur but is rare.
